I guess I need to learn how to use a lathe now! Pick up a 1930's/early-'40's South Bend 10"x36" 'Heavy 10' lathe for really cheap on craigslist...just had to drive 2hrs to Raymond, WA to get it. It's not very pretty, but works very well and came with a decent amount of tooling. The icing on the cake was the 70yo machinist/woodworker I bought it from, he had lots of great stories to tell.
Need to get a new motor since this one is 3-phase (or get a VFD), but that's not a big deal. Will eventually get a fresh coat of paint.

The 90qs is still sitting neglected outside since getting sidelined for the CGT and now UrQ project. But....it might be coming into the garage soon. I've been reorganizing some priorities in life as I plan on getting engaged later this year and wanting to buy a house next year. This mean I'm planning on getting rid of my Touareg to cut some expenses (and at the same time remove my ability to tow stuff so I can resist adding more projects easier). I'm currently waiting on VW to decide how they're going to respond and possible compensate 3.0L TDI owners so I don't want to sell it until that's figured out in case they decide to give me a lump of cash. In the mean time, that gives me time to figure out what I want to DD in the future. I've given up on my dream of buying a Focus RS, maybe I'll get a used one in a few years. I've toyed with the idea of getting a Mk7 GTI or used A3. Then I kinda remembered I had this perfectly good B4 90q wasting away outside and only needs an engine put into it. I had started to brush off the idea of doing anything with it since we're getting really close to being able to import B4 avants which is what I'd really want more than a sedan. But then I had the idea to skip the V8t idea into it and save that for the avant that I'll import in a few years. So that leads me to deciding about another swap into the 90qs sedan. Currently leaning very heavily on a 1.8t swap like Dave. Super cheap and super simple and still a fun DD that gets great MPG. I sadly passed on a 1.8t passat parts car last night for $150 due to a sketchy deal. I've also toyed with the idea of a spare AAN I have sitting around, but that's a lot more work/fab/parts cost since I'd have to source a few things for it. 1.8t donor cars are cheap and have everything I need.

    Soooooo....cliff notes:
This car will probably be getting a 1.8t and turned into DD status. I will probably start on this sooner than later since I plan on taking my time with the UrQ anyways.
V8t/01E/lots of other goodies will be saved for a B4 avant that I will import in a couple years.

Pulled the old girl out of the yard and into the driveway...only a few feet laterally but still progress! Also I think I found a well maintained donor engine for a good price that I'm probably going to pick up.

Some parts I've been hoarding that will get installed with the 1.8T:
-RS2 headlights...will probably run these until I modify my dual rounds to fit the B4 better since I'll be DD'ing it. Having just low beams with the single round isn't the safest idea.
-Smoked euro tails. Will see if I like the smoked better than the standard euro tails I've already got.
-5x112 eventually? For now I plan on staying 4x108 for simplicity and since I've got fresh tires (albeit 205's) on my TSW Hockenheims. I might see if my 17" Porsche Cup 1's will fit with the 4x108-5x130 adapters I've got. If I do convert to 5x112 then I have a few options including 17" Avantgard and 18" UPS.
-Reinstall comp spoiler (instead of sending to Dave haha)
-B4 euro rear bumper. Sadly it's just a normal euro and not a competition/color edition bumper (like Dave has...) But it's still better than the US one.
    -Black leather seats
-Will see if the FMIC I have sitting around will fit...it's top entry so I don't think it will.
    -Carbon fiber B4 hood
    -3" stainless exhaust with v-bands

Forgot how nicely the interior cleans up, will look even better with black seats. And I forgot the car only has 140k miles on it until I looked at the odometer.

And it's gone! Say goodbye to the V8...kinda sad as seeing Kirk's V8 CQ at Audi Expo reminded me just how much I like V8's in these small chassis cars. Oh well, that'll come soon enough and be in an Avant which will be even more hilarious to drive around in and see the look on people's faces.

And we have a donor! Started to think I shouldn't even bother finding ADR engine mounts and I should work on my fab skills and make my own. I do need to practice my welding...

I'm sure you know this, but just in case, make sure you get that timing belt tensioner off of there. The original one on my B5 Passat ate itself. Thankfully it was at idle in my driveway, and the belt didn't skip any teeth. Pure luck.

That car also shat out the fuel pressure regulator. It sits in a formed sheet metal cup on the fuel rail, and didn't have a good fit to seal the o ring.

IIRC AEB heads have the biggest ports. Should be a good motor to build on if you want to. Mine ran pretty good with the bigger injectors, tune, and rebuilt/upgraded turbo.

Thanks, I'll definitely take a look at those things as I've never owned a car with a 1.8T before. I've been doing lots of reading up on them and the common issues. Timing belt was done 2k miles ago, I'll have to check and see what tensioner is in it.

If it's not original, then it's probably ok. The original ones were the subject of a class action lawsuit.

Decided I'm going to keep the stock rods and clutch for now. I've got a line on some cheap ones of each, but I'm not first in line. If they come through I'll grab them, if not I won't worry about it.
I did remember I have a Garret GT2560R (GT28R) off a S14 Nissan that I used to have on a turbo Ford Escort. It needs rebuilt, so I'm going to send it to Pure Turbo. This should be a perfect turbo for a stock 1.8T and should net me around 250whp which is approaching the limit of the stock rods. I might limit myself even lower, maybe something like 200-220whp which should still be fun.

Cleaned up the engine, it's in really nice shape. Also deleted the mechanical fan and idler pulley. I modded the PS bracket to work with the V6 pump, and then talked to Dave and realize the A4 pump works just fine with the 90 rack so I put that back on since it's less work.

IMG_20160702_150955 by Vex Art, on Flickr

If you for some reason want to run the V6 PS pump, you have to clearance the rear part of the bracket to move the pump back a few millimeters.

IMG_20160702_142820 by Vex Art, on Flickr

You'll also need to fab up a spacer for the front bolt:

IMG_20160702_143436 by Vex Art, on Flickr

You'd then need a longer water pump v-belt and a shorter serpentine belt. Along with a bracket somewhere on the bottom to lock it in place. In the end I'd reccomend using the 1.8T PS pump as the fittings thread right in.

IMG_20160702_142906 by Vex Art, on Flickr

Seller was accurate in saying the timing belt was fresh, looks like a new tensioner too.

IMG_20160702_132654 by Vex Art, on Flickr

Scoped the cylinders and they look fine with not too much carbon built up on the pistons.
Also picked up a B5 V6 01A transmission for better highway gearing, and it was only $60. I contemplated swapping in the 5psd narrow 01E I have sitting around, but that would require converting to the B5 rear end and driveshaft and is more hassle than I want to do at the moment. And I'd have to give up the locking rear, which I kinda want to keep. Eventually I want to try and swap a 4.11 200tq rear R&P into the B4 rear diff as they will apparently work and allow you to retain the locking function.

    Tiny turbo vs small turbo

IMG_20160702_172629 by Vex Art, on Flickr

Stock turbo/manifold removed to make way for the ADR engine mounts. Dave was kind enough to find a seller in europe and arrange for me to buy them. They should be here soon.

IMG_20160702_172834 by Vex Art, on Flickr

Swapped in the black rear leather seat I had (have fronts too) to see how the two-tone interior would look with black instead of tan seats. I'm not sold yet, I'll reserve judgement until I swap the fronts in too. I definitely think it needs at least black floor mats too, maybe black carpet. Regardless, the front passenger seat needed changed anyways so I figured I'd give this a try since I found the set at a junkyard for cheap in excellent shape.

Ready to go in minus the engine mounts which should be here this week or next.

And got the B5 wiring harness installed (or at least routed). Need to get my B4 Bentley software working and find B5 wiring diagrams so I can start hooking stuff up. It'll be a bit more complicated since some wiring has already been messed with from the IIc days

I've figured out all of the wiring to adapt and make everything work with the B4 chassis. I still need to get a tee to add an oil temp sensor since the 1.8T didn't have one and I'd like to keep the B4 aux gauges all working.

New clutch thanks to Dana; Southbend Stage 3 Daily with DMF.

IMG_20160723_150751 by Vex Art, on Flickr

New rotors thanks to Chris; 4x108 2pc 323mm to go with the 928S4/RS2 Brembo calipers I've got. Just need to get an RS2 adapter bracket and fab up spacers to account for going from a 304mm rotor to 322mm.

IMG_20160723_164222 by Vex Art, on Flickr

Fumoto quick drain valve installed. Had one on my UrS6 and loved it so I had to get one for this.

IMG_20160723_134230 by Vex Art, on Flickr

Got the ADR engine mounts finally, quick coat of paint. Due to time restraints I'm not going crazy with the powdercoat like I did with the CGT.

IMG_20160723_183149 by Vex Art, on Flickr

Played around with the smoked euro tails I bought a while back. They're a bit too much on a black car, but I might run them anyways for a bit and see how I like them. I'll probably end up going back to the red.

ADR mounts have bosses for the 1.8T heatshield, but they needed to be drilled and tapped. (ADR left, B5 AEB right)

Been too busy to really post an update, but I finished up the wiring and the car started for the first time in years last night! Ran like crap because I don't have any of the intake/vacuum system plumped and no exhaust, but at least I've got the wiring correct. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel! 5 weeks until Vegas...

Been too busy to post an update for a while...BBQ is now 4 weeks away so I've been busting ass to get it ready. Doesn't help that my parents will be here for two weeks this weekend, so I won't be able to get too much done until right before.

Been practising my TIG'ing (still pretty crappy) but I made the stock B5 cat/downpipe fit the B4 chassis. The B5 routes it up and over the axles, but the steering arms on the B4 get in the way so it must go in front and under the axles. Thus the cat has to be shortened and angled down. I could've done this with less welds and kept the stock O2 bung, but I didn't have any 2.25" pipe. I only had 2.5" which meant I had to replace the whole section of pipe between the cat itself and the flange. Still need to add the replacement O2 bung.

More practice on a v-band for the 3" exhaust. Still need to fab up the flex pipe and connection from the downpipe to the catback.

Found out my rockauto radiator despite being the correct width and having the outlets on the correct size is not the right height. Too late now, maybe in the future I'll try and source the correct one like Dave did, but this will do for now.

Also had some clearance issues with the fan and belt that Dave didn't have...might be due to the odd radiator too, not sure. I redrilled the mount arms in the upper core support to bring the radiator closer to the front which solved the clearance problem. But I don't think I should've had to do it.

I also bought the same radiator hose as Dave and it was too short. Once again, maybe related to the radiator, but I don't think so. Probably bad QC control from the hose manufacturer. Quick trip to the auto parts store and I was able to find one that would work.

Installed an 034 breather kit. Despite the bad things about 034, I'm still glad they at least make things like this because nobody else does.

Installed a VDO VW oil pressure gauge T and an I5 oil pressure gauge sender since the AEB doesn't have an oil pressure sender stock.

Rear coolant manifold as the new push-on style connectors. Found an adapter at the local auto parts store that allowed me to connect a regular coolant hose to it and clamp it. For the connection to the water pipe, I cut off the push-on connector and clamped to the pipe.

Won't have these installed for the BBQ, but I did figure out a big brake setup with parts I had laying around. A few months ago 034 was clearing out some C4 UrS4 Boxster (non-S) caliper adapter brackets for $60 shipped. Too cheap to pass up despite not owning a C4 anymore. Figured I'd see if I could use them. By pure luck, if you mount them backwards (they have engraged a 'vvv Rotor vvv' on them to indicate the direction of install) and using just a few washers as spacers they are the perfect adapters for my 314x30mm (Euro A8) rotors with Porsche medium black calipers (944/968 M030, RS2, 993 non-turbo). Still on the stock 4x108 B4 hubs, I'll probably need to recheck when I convert to 5x112 if the hubs are a different offset. They clear 16" wheels, but require a lot of 'spoke' clearance so I need spacers to clear my 16" TSW.

I wish there was some measure of that as part of wheel specs. Had the same problem when I was trying to find a replacement set of wheels for the 190 that would clear the huge SL calipers up front.

Have been too busy slaving away to really do too much documentation or updates, but here we go.

To do in the next week:
    *Bleed brakes
    *Install desired taillights and seal
*Fix broken tabs on RS2 headlights and mount. Install HID
    *Repaint and mount RS2 bumper
    *Mount comp spoiler
    *Test drive
*Get fresh gas (already drained a bunch of the 4 year old gas)
    *Pass emissions testing
*Test drive, test drive, test drive and find any bugs
*Install chipped ECU and aftermarket diverter
*Clean, clean, clean. Car has 4 years of pollen on it, needs a very deep clean. Some sap removal.

    If I have time (doubtful):
    *Install black front seats
*Install carbon hood (if it utilizes the stock latch, I forget; won't have time for hood pins)
*Paint and install euro rear bumper

Things that won't happen before BBQ, but will come this winter:
    *Big brake install
    *Porsche Cup 1 wheel install
    *GT28R install
    *Powdercoat stuff
    *Suspension?

Got lots of practice on my TIG skills fabbing up the exhaust...plenty of room for improvement for sure and lots of crappy parts fitup (I really need a band saw)

Got rains on boatloads, not fun. Got the downpipe mated up with the custom 3" exhaust I didn't fabricate. Used FID interlocking v-bands, worked well and didn't warp.

Gave welding aluminum a first try too for the diverter bung on my intercooler plumbing, once again need a lot more practice

Got the car started only to hear a horrible grinding noise coming from the front of the engine. Turned out to be bad bearings in the stock alternator. Couldn't find a replacement alternator in stock at any of the local stores, but remember I had a couple 40v V8 engines sitting around. Pulled one off and magically it has the same mounting and fits fine, despite being 150A and bigger.

Fabricated a bracket for the throttle cable since the B4 isn't long enough (and mine might be even shorter due to the V8 swap)

IMG_20160923_200628 by Vex Art, on Flickr

Got all of the coolant lines hooked up, filled, and bled. Radiator fans wired up and tested working.
Got all of the vacuum lines routed too, used all kinds of stuff that I had sitting around so don't really have any documentation on what's needed.

IMG_20161009_155117 by Vex Art, on Flickr

Wiring temporarily tucked up, I want to revisit this later and come up with a better ECU mounting point

IMG_20161011_210034 by Vex Art, on Flickr

Coolant gauge read high with the stock AEB sender, I ordered an ABA one which is supposed to make the gauge read correctly.

    It runs!

Wiring issues/notes for me to expand on later, just want to get them down so I remember them:

*K-wire is mislabeled color-wise on AEB drawings, so go by the connector pin instead
*Don't wire in the L-wire to an OBD2 connector. It caused VCDS only to connect while the engine was running, if the engine was off it got communication errors. Unhooked the L-wire and all problems solved.

    AEB OBD2 wiring:
    Pin 4 = Ground
    Pin 7 = K-wire
    Pin 16 = +12v

    Other accomplishments:
*Installed Aux input/USB to the VW Monsoon radio I have in the car
*Installed 3-spoke sport airbag wheel. Wanted to install a non-airbag sport wheel I've got but I'll have to reverse the clockspring mods that were previously done...not enough time.
*Performed throttle body alignment. Car would idle high when warm before this, now it idles perfectly.
*Oil temp and pressure wired in and working great with the aux gauges.
    *20 mmHg vacuum
*Installed TSW Hockenheim wheels...with the wrong tire size (B2 size), but they're the only good 4x108 wheels I've got so they'll do for now.

    Other things to troubleshoot:
*Ambient temp display isn't working, did before so I probably didn't hook something back up in the cluster
*Hesitates under initial tip in with very light throttle...probably just old gas, we'll see. Might need to clean the MAF and throttle body.
*Didn't get the coolant level sensor wiring correct, not a big deal for now I'll figure it out later.
    *ABS light is on
