Super jealous! Really missing the days of hopping in my Mk2 and driving to Missoula, just to see friends, just for the hell of it. Also miss having a dog.

    Good luck and safe travels!

I used to pop the sunroof on my gti for my Basset Hound Fred. He was old, blind, and deaf, but the nose still worked. He was happy as long as he could sniff what was passing by. My buddy's dog always has his nose glued to the vents in his van. He calls it the dog's "data port."

He is awesome and is having an absolute blast. As long as he is with me, he is good. He protects my cars and scares off anyone within 10'. He doesn't like rattles or exhaust. He thinks when I down shift I am mad and gets all small haha. He has to have the window down or he will shake and start to pant. Not sure if its his game or he gets car sick. But dude did well in the long, quick haul.
If he doesn't like rattles or exhaust.... how did he handle a drive in a Mk2? haha Were the passes pretty clear? I haven't checked lately; I'd imagine it'd be a bit sketch this time of year, though.

Sorry to hear about your pup and Mk2.

My dog glues his nose to the vents too when the heat is on and has his head outside the window. Window was down from Puyallup to Reno, haha.

HAHA, he does ok from 60-65mph... Anything over that, he thinks the note of exhaust is me being angry. I will not take him in my 92 VR6 GTI anymore, he hates that car... And its hard to baby it.

Passes were COMPLETELY clear. I barely saw any snow on the whole trip. Reno has 0 snow and needs it bad.

That's good for me, I leave Wednesday evening on my road trip. Got snow tires on and chains ready just in case I need them.

Should be fine, unless we get some of that East coast crap over on our side of the US... It would take a lot to impact the passes, I saw traces of snow up in the hills, but several hundred feet from the roads.

Didn't do ANYTHING over the weekend, so no updates until today. Decided to check out the Carson City Pick N Pull:

First pick from the first yard visit while down here:

    Another view of the loot:

NEVER had a receipt this long from a yard, haha:

Yeah, a lot of cool looking drives/roads out here. Will get out more this week for sure. Took Old 395 back to Reno today, cool sights and fun roads. Love the 65mph speed limits and the WIDE freeways. So many lanes its nuts!

    February 3rd:

Hung out with my mom til she basically had to go to work most of the day. Sold some mk2 parts and made it to the Sparks PnP. Going back tomorrow.

    Later that night:

4 lane road and 3 Hondas and one GTI... Hondas got smoked by my beastly 8v. Colby was barking at them even, haha. Best part we all went to the same mini mart. They didn't believe it was a stock GTI. So of course it turned into a mini honda show. They had to explain every mod done to their cars. Funny times in Reno.

    February 4rd:

Another trip and large haul at the Sparks PNP:

I am their new best customer... more toolkit rewards earned. Should almost have another $20. Woo!

    A few hours ago:

Decided to go to a casino with $6 and walked out with:

Now trying to buy a Mk2 diesel in Reno. Good times, until next time.

So, are you living down there for a bit as well, or is this still part of the extended vacation?

No I am heading back home this weekend at some point. I have only been in Reno 6 days, tomorrow will be a week. Have no schedule to adhere by so just hanging out in Reno. But I got a car or two to sell, taxes to do, some parts to sell that are at home, old roommate is moving out and a new one is moving in. The owner of the Mk2 Diesel accepted my offer and I am meeting him tonight to pick it up. Depending on the condition of the car, I will drive it home and then put the swap in a different car OR I might swap the diesel into my GTI before I leave for home.

I love the reactions you get from people when they realize you're on a long road trip in an "old" Mk2.

From my last road trip out to Michigan, I think in 2010.

Especially when you bought the Mk2 4 days before driving to Reno and all over from WA. LOVE IT!

So, are you leaving your current GTI down in Reno or are you getting one of the cars shipped?

My mom has a large house/yard/rv parking. Plenty of room to leave a car. Plus I plan on coming down here more frequent for VW parts alone, not to mention visit my mom. I drove my 87 GTI down here not my 92 (VR6). So not too worried about it.

The body of the jetta diesel is not great, might just strip it over night and call a scrapper in the AM tomorrow. Then I will either a.) do a diesel swap into my GTI before I leave Reno or b.) haul the swap home with me.

Well was on my way to PNP and either the intank fuel pump or the main fuel pump is basically shot. I am assuming main pump under car due to the loud buzzing it developed the past few days. Good thing it happened right in front of a 7-11. Got a teriyaki stick, rockstar and a PB twix. By the time I got back whatever pump it is cooled off and I putted home the 4 miles. Is this a sign that I need the diesel and to swap it into the GTI?

BTW: I am spending the winnings above to buy a running mk2 jetta diesel, not sure if I posted about it here or on FB.

But the worst part was.. EVEN the 7-11 had 6 slot machines in it. Sooo tempting, but I walked away.

After dinner I am heading to pick up that jetta diesel... Then I am going to pull the 8v gas out of the GTI, fuel system and US wiring. The CE2 wiring, tank, diesel swap will be going into the GTI. I plan on getting the 8v completely out before bed tonight.

Future bay of the 87 GTI:
