Bizarre Threat Reported At Coffee Shop Where Officers Slain

TACOMA, Wash. -- The Pierce County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an incident involving a rifle at the same Forza coffee shop in Parkland where four Lakewood police officers were shot and killed.

KIRO 7 has learned the incident took place at about 4 a.m. Tuesday, when someone, possibly a woman, pulled up to the drive-through window, apparently brandishing a weapon and yelling something at the barista. Sources told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Kevin McCarty that the person then threw the rifle at the barista butt-first, striking the employee in the chest before driving away. The weapon turned out to be a toy.

Pierce County sheriff’s detective Ed Troyer said investigators are questioning employees at Forza to determine what happened. It’s not known if the incident was a robbery attempt or related to the shootings last November. No arrests have been made. Troyer said the Sheriff’s Department will be releasing more information later today.

Maurice Clemmons opened fire in the coffee shop on the morning of Nov. 29, 2009, killing Sgt. Mark Renninger, 39, and Officers Ronald Owens, 37, Tina Griswold, 40, and Greg Richards, 42.

Clemmons was fatally shot by a Seattle police officer after a two-day manhunt.
