Frogette: LS Powered 1960's Bugeye Sprite

This is the first time we've done a project like this, so I thought I'd share. This build will only contain the body of a 1960 Sprite... that's slightly modified.

Almost everything else is all custom. Here is our story. We do engineering design and fab work for the off-road industry. Our neighbor has been getting into the restomod world. His friend had a 1960 Bugeye Sprite out rotting in a field. He found a buyer that wanted to stuff a small block V8 under the hood and sent him to my neighbor for the updates. My neighbor put his foot down, and said we wouldn't feel comfortable putting that much power into a vehicle with minimal chassis, suspension, and brakes. I was called, and from there everything spiraled wildly out of control and the Frogette was born. Full custom chassis and suspension with a Sprite body set on top was the verdict. We're a ways into this, so lets catch up.

    CAD

Had the body dipped. Luckily some clean metal underneath.

    Upper control arm CAD.

Lower control arm CAD and rendering.

    Laser cut and welded up.

Had to get a little creative with the rear end brackets. This thing is tiny.

    Chassis.

Had a shop in town CNC a budget swiss army fixture for the build. We've broken the car up into several weldments that will be able to be rigged up on the fixture with the 3d prints. Once those are done, all the weldments will come together on the same fixture for the full chassis.

    Motor.

The sway bar arms and links are next on the chopping block for the Frogette.

A little comparison between the Frogette rear end and a standard 9" rear end. This thing is tiny. Only real parts remind you of how small this car really is.

Sheetmetal was cut in Post Falls. Almost time for welding.

Welding has begun. First weldment on our swiss army fixture.

Sway bar arms are done. Getting close to the finish line on the machine work.

    Burning through the weldments.

Thanks for the kind words. We are very fortunate to have found a client that's willing to fund this craziness. Here's where we left off for the weekend.

Just saw your post on Thumper Talk (my other hangout). Good to see you're getting props for the nice Go Pro mounts. Nice work on the car too!

Thanks Benny! Rear half of the Frogette is really starting to take shape. Should be a fun week on this blitz of fabrication.

Is the MDF template CNC'd for all the mount points for building each piece?

Yes. Took a lot of CAD hours, but we arranged the chassis into 7 sub-weldments that are jigged on the table. The final chassis will also be arranged on the same board with those 7 weldments. The board and CNC costs we're very cheap. Well worth it.

Looking nice! What material did you hog them out of? Do you do that machining in house?
