    New project car...a 914

    Don’t want to let the cat out of the bag till tomorrow incase something falls apart with the deal but.... I am hopefully going to pick up a new project to finally replace the 190....

    Any guesses?��

    I got outbid on it by someone else who wanted it more. Was a 1970 914.....we had agreed on a price and then he reneged today based on getting a higher offer....I had a feeling as soon as we had a deal he would call everyone on the fence about it and apply pressure.

    Well in a happy turn of events I ended up buying the car today!!

    The tub has been fully sandblasted, new metal welded in where needed, 914-6 bracing added, seam sealed and painted factory orange underneath, in wheel wells, floors, trunk and engine bay. GT fender flares added. Still lots to do but massive head start. Tons and tons of parts came with it too.

    Super excited - been wanting a flared 914 for years now.

    I talked to the guy that did all the work to the 914 and got a bunch of pics from during the process. Really great reference to have.

    It has had the 914-6 chassis bracing welded into the rear wheel wells as well as inside the cabin.

    The entire tub was sandblasted and epoxy primed after the sheet metal areas that needed new metal were fixed.

    Bought a few parts online - dash steel structure assembly, gauges etc as all that was missing for some reason...

    Trying to decide between traditional Fuchs 911 alloys and 911/944 cookie cutter alloys - kinda leaning towards the cookie cutters at this point.

    I have since bought another dash frame and gauge pod set to give more options to piece together as nice a set up as possible. There is an early and late style of dash I have learned and I am trying to keep the car as “early” as possible.

    Drivetrain wise I am about 90% set on a 911 6 cylinder swap now. Horrifyingly expensive compared to other legitimately “better” options but by far the coolest looking, sounding and best option for future value. This will of course require me to find a deal on a used motor which is no easy task these days.

    Well I bought an adapter plate, flywheel, pressure plate and disc to mate a SBC to a Porsche transaxle.... so looks like it will become a bit of an outlaw custom. But did you expect anything different I guess after the v8 190?

    I just can’t stomach the insane air cooled 911 motor prices $4000-$6000 for a rebuildable 2L/2.2L/2.7L long block core?.... ouch!! Then add $6-10k for rebuild plus min $2500 for carbs. Super cool but not going to happen.

    As much as I would like a modern LS I will be putting in an old school small block motor. At this point I am leaning toward a small bore short stroke motor. Something like the DZ302 that came in the 67-69 z28’s - capable of pretty high reving for a domestic v8 (6-7000rpm)HP higher up in the band with less torque down low. Perfect in a lightweight chassis like the 914.

    I also picked up a new minty front hood to replace the one that came with the car. The skin had come loose from the underframe and kinked. Seemed easier to just replace rather than try and fix.
